In an online interview with Kosofe LG coordinator for child protection network, Alhaji Rasheed Awofeso disclosed what constitutes childs abuse and the fundamental rights parents must provide for their childrens to kosofepost.
Recently in print and electronic media child protection network is being heard . Could you please tell us what C.P.N is all about and your role?
Child protection network could be defined as organization that take upon itself to protect the right of children and response on the event of occurrence.
What are the right of the children’s?
Right to health, education, shelter, moral and social security. It’s incumbent on the parent to play their role along with govt. For instance, a parent right from the point of pregnancy should attend ante natal up to the date of delivery, at that point it’s government to provide health facility to obtain such services.
We have observed you talking about mamaye over the month’s, we shall come back to that later . Few of the child rights you enumerated if parents failed to provide it. Does it has any consequences and what’s your understanding of child abuse ?
Naturally, abuse is described as an act that is capable in inflicting pain in a child, it could be temporary, permanent. Rape, violence of any form, battering, intent to drown, fist blow. As I mentioned, once such right are abandoned by parents, it will take untold effect on such child, take for instance, where parent failed to obtain immunisation for a child, such child is susceptible to illness which may result in death or permanent injury.
Today, Some Nigerians are still found of committing both emotional and physical abuses on their kid’s as a form of correction. Do you strongly agree or disagree with such primitive methodology?
Has the method been helpful? It’s not the best because they could not achieve positive results, as a result there are need to apply method that will grant desired effect.
What are the other means today’s parent’s can use to positively change their children’s apart from the traditional corporal punishment?
About alternative way to punish the kids, by denying such kids of watching favorite TV programme, having special corner at home for erring kids, show such kids that previous promised will not be kept and other things that will not afflict permanent injuries in them.
Sex is medicinal and good for one health aside child bearing,it helps to reduce tension and friction in the body system. However, the rate of child rape case’s today are on the high degree. If the Fx allegedly affected the cost of living in Nigeria, we don’t think it affected “one night stand” service provider rate that rapists will not afford to pay. What do you think is responsible for the menace and how can it be curbed in our society?
If sex is medicinal, must such be done with kids? Causes of rape in our society today may include, indiscipline on the part of men, naturally must one rape to satisfy sex urge, you can balance your sex satisfaction by consensus with matured partners. How will you explain a situation where a father of 70 year old raped a girl of 10, in quest for sex satisfaction, such man deserves a permanent site in Kirikiri prison. Economic factor is another reason, by experience I have handled case of rape where a housewife kept an external affairs within a hood, she do send her teenage daughter to collect cash and sundries items from the man friend, at the end of the day, the man violated the daughter.
Environment is a factor, a community where sales of drug/other stimulants are sold, most men are capable of committing crimes under such influence. In ability to break the silence for fear of been stigmatized is a factor, most men believed that survivor of rape may not be willing to open up, such gives them courage to continue to perpetrate the acts.
Enabling law is another factor, like Lagos State is doing now, it create an environment that allow proper persecution of perpetrators, people are now willing to demand for justice.
As at today, rape offence is a bailable offence, that does not limit the prosecution rather lots of them are serving various jail terms in Kirikiri.
As the C.P.N coordinator for kosofe local government and one of the LG considered by Unicef,Noa for the child protection system strengthening in Lagos Nigeria. What are your action plans for effective publicity and awareness campaign’s at the grassroots(Cdas) level?
Get it noted that Lagos State government is doing lots of sensitization against violence against children, for real, Lagos has made adequate provision for the program to be a success. Once the state takes the lead, definitely local government will follow suit. Government has been giving serial capacity training to multi-tier govt agencies(judiciary, police, career staff, community) to make the campaign all comers affairs. All hands are on deck to contain the demonic act in our society. Thanks end violence against children is a struggle for all of us.
