According to Indira ghandi”In an underdeveloped society, the anxiety is of infant mortality. In advanced one it is to keep alive the aged” but in Nigeria reverse is the case. Sequel to this the Kosofe social mobilization committee chairman Alh. R. Awofeso explained how mortality can be reduced or stopped during a realtime interview conducted by kosofepost.
In kosofe LG , we have seen you as children’s advocacy ambassador with various NGOs. Please, could you tell us the correlation between mamaye and child’s protection network?
Both are not government organization. Mamaye advocacy is on reduction of mortality rate in pregnant mother and new born babies as a result of many factors while child protection network is to help such babies to have a conducive environment devoid all forms of violence. So, as a result of these, the 2 organizations stand to ensure safe delivery and protection of such babies from any form of abuse, to have a safe adulthood, it start from the cradle and such duties are to be discharged by adults.
What are the factors that causes mortality and how can it be prevented ?
It can be broadly be divided into two, on the part of government and the people. On part of govt. Lack of skilled professional to take deliveries or midwives the pregnant mothers, you see some medical facilities without capable hands or you don’t even have facilities at all, lack of live saving drugs, most women lost their lives as a result of it. Upon delivery mothers might developed post delivery complication and such requires some special drugs which might not be available .
Mortality could be as a result of lack of functional blood bank. Mothers upon delivery might need blood as a result of loss of blood, once such is not on ground, it becomes problem and such leads to untimely death.
On the part of pregnant mother, Failure to attend Ante natal clinic(ANC), once pregnancy is confirmed on mothers, she is entitled to attend Minimum of 4-6 ANC before delivery, such numbers of visit might be increased depending on the medical history of such mother, most women don’t attend, rather they visit unskilled Traditional birth attendant(TBA).
What measure is government taken to ensure the TBA provide improved services?
Government within its own arrangements has continued to partner with TBA via primary health care board at ensuring that health delivery in Lagos state is second to none but you can rule out quack in all professions.
Also, we need to report failure of pregnant mother to take nourished meals and necessary drugs. Pregnant women are expected to take fruits, vegetables, forliic acid, vitamins c, fish to aid the health of the mother and the foetus.
Failure on the part of people to report cases of mortality in the community to enable government to collate such data to build database and find root causes and proffer solution to abate such future occurrence,Need to break the silence.
To reduce mortality rate a pregnant woman must attend ANC at least 4-6month’s before the EDD. Don’t you think there’s urgent need to partner with community stakeholders to carry the information to the grassroots?
You are very correct, that is where the social mobilisation committee comes in, I represent kosofe local government at the Lagos State social mobilisation committee been controlled by Lagos State primary health care board under Ministry of health, we escalates all these through community dialogue, focus group discussion and we key into cdc/cdas meeting, marketmen/women,artisans,Nurtw,sectorial meetings and all other means of having discussions with people. Era of “Ebola” outbreak still fresh in our memories,The State SMC crew went round Lagos State to educate people on various precautions to be taken in order to eradicate the killer virus In our communities.
To show the commitment on the part of Lagos State govt, it’s a Committee that accommodate TBA, at least as partners in progress to help reduce the mortality rate in pregnant mother and new born babies.
Do you face any challenges in the cause of various advocacy programmes?
Challenges? Of course now! Not limited to funds to carry out lots more on advocacy, group discussion.
Can you mention few of them?
Some communities are hard to reach as a result of terrain, we need to get to coastal areas which are not accessible by vehicle. You need to travel by boats and we all know challenges that are associated with this Planning and logistics are big problem.
On the part of our people, some people are not willing to see anything good in the advocacy because they find it difficult to change their old ways because of social norms.
With that, Dont you think your advocacy programmes Worth’s private organizations in kosofe LG area’s to key in as form of corporate social responsibility ?
Advocacy toward corporate organization in form of CSR. Yes its a welcome development, we are planning to write to organisation even beyond kosofe territory, it’s a gradual process.
