After Alimosho the most populated local government in Lagos state, Kosofe follows before the additional 2 lcdas; Agboyi Ketu and Ikosi Isheri was created out of the kosofe Local government by Ashiwaju Bola Tinubu to bring governance more closer to the grassroots.
In Agboyi ketu, The motorcycle popularly known as Okada in Kosofe Fed. Constituency of Lagos State has been the most effective and efficient mode of transportation in the locality over the decades.
Moving the residents and visitors in AK, Kosofe from one unit to another units of the Motorcycle operators association branches in the LGAs.
These has created employment and empowerment for the operators who are indigenes of the 36 states in Nigeria and FCT inconclusive operating in our communities while some are foreigners.
However, following the rate of alarming accidents, disobedient to traffic rules and the criminal activities non members of MOAS,perpetrated with the bikes compelled the former governor of Lagos State, now the Minister of Power, Works and Housing H.E Babatunde Sofola , SAN. As a matter of emergency to ban the movements of Okadas on the trunk A and B Roads within kosofe and the entire Lagos State.
According to observation research by KP, Some of them ignored the state government directives by plying on the restricted routes.
They even went as far as riding their bikes on the BRT corridor from Irawo in AK to Anthony in KSF LG.
The MOAS, an affiliate of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, regulates their activities in the Larger Kosofe , Lagos.
One of the Kosofepost reporter’s who went round some units, branches and zones in Agboyi Ketu in Kosofe gathered that for anybody to operate his Okada within the council environs must be prepared to pay between #700 to #1200 for unrestricted movements on the Trunk C roads.
For instance, the Members of the unit along Ajelogo , AK near Forte Oil Filling Station pays N350 daily. However, if they takes passengers to Oshoogun, Mr. Biggs,Elebiju, Alapere Estate, Tipper garage, Agboyi , Ketu respectively. They have to pay additional money ranging from N50 -#100. The total rough estimation for an Okada to operate in AK is N1200.
Sanction: Any Okada riders who is not willing to pay will either be riding his bike in his compound and face strong showdown.
If they attempts to ply the various units and refuses to pay, their bike can be impounded by union taskforce and pay bigger fine.
Some operators, allegedly said the union can raise spurious allegations against a defaulters to get him arrested by the security agents and be charge to court to prove their authority.
Our other findings also revealed that its not only the union that bleeds the operators but also suffers from the security agents. Such as Op Mesa, Taskforce, Police , both state and FG Sars.
￼A report from an Eyewitness from a purported unit in Branch C, in Kosofe LG has it that when a team of the Federal Sars visited the unit as usual to see the chairman or the vice chairman of the park, Seeing none of them was around led to bullying, forceful removal of several Okada keys and accessories such as; Engine Oil covers and the plug head connectors.
SEE PICTURE 2 Few minutes later they reportedly drove back with their White Mini Suzuki bus known as Korope with the registration number of AGL 5*4 XL. They called the affected riders handed them their keys and the Okada components and they both smiled.
At this very particular unit N300 are paid to move around branch C, and B, in Kosofe that has about 12units, you only need to pay between N300- N350 to ride all through the units.
From Agboyi Ketu lcda, Ikosi Isheri lcdas and Kosofe Local gov’t, its only N50 per Okadas that goes to the lcdas/Local government IGR while the union took the rest to share it with their branch, zones and state headquarters. While they claimed fraction of the money are been used for PRs with security agents and other miscellaneous expenses.
