The Association of Practitioners of Community Media in Nigeria, APCOM, has emerged champion of the 2019 edition of a five-a-side soccer competition put together by the Lagos State chapter of Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR).
The tournament, which took place on Saturday 15th of June 2019 at the indoor section of the University of Lagos(UNILAG) sports complex, Akoka-Lagos, was part of activities meant to mark the 2019 edition of NIPR Public Relations Week, themed ‘Promoting Professional Excellence and Community for Development’.
The football tournament, which took a league format, saw 4 teams including eventual winner, APCOM, keenly contest for the coveted NIPR trophy. Other participating teams that featured at the one-day football league tournament were Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Brand Journalists’ Association of Nigeria(BJAN), and Photo Journalists Association of Nigeria(PJAN).
Football spectators were served with sumptuous display of beautiful football artistry, breathtaking dribbles, awesome passing skills, and brilliant individual display by players representing participating teams at the event.
To emerge champions, APCOM defeated their first opponents, BJAN 3-0. Their second match was a hard-fought 1-1 draw with PJAN, while a spectacular display by players of APCOM against the more fancied, NIPR, ensured the community based media practitioners went home with the trophy after a gruelling 2-2 draw.
During the presentation of medals, Chairman, NIPR Lagos Chapter, Mr. Olusegun McMedal, commended the participating teams, especially APCOM football players for putting up a good show at the invitational tournament.
Mr. McMedal described the players of APCOM as worthy winners of the contest while also praising other participating teams for their sportsmanship and fine display.
Commenting on his team’s success, the President of APCOM, Mr. Dayo Akintobi, described the achievement of APCOM at the soccer competition as a reflection of what the Association represents.
Mr. Akintobi who is also the Publisher of Ilupeju Today Newspaper, noted that having a unity of purpose, perseverance, determination, hard work, focus, and a workable game plan all contributed to the triumph of the APCOM team.
“In spite of been debutants at the annual football competition, our resilience paid off eventually.
Today, the distinguishing characteristic of the renewed community media sector, whether in print, broadcast, or online configuration, is its commitment to serving the information needs of its particular community, and doing it diligently, professionally, ethically, and truthfully, which is most important in this era of “fake” news.
APCOM have shown through the performance of its football team during the contest that our members are mentally and physically ready for the task ahead.
Winning this trophy symbolizes a triumph for the grassroots media sector which has been sidelined and neglected over the years.” President Akintobi noted.
Highlight of the event was a presentation of medals and a trophy to the victorious APCOM team.
