A special engagement with the multiple awards winning Division Police Officer (DPO) of the Ogudu Police Station in Lagos, SP Celestina Kalu by Kosofe Post and other team of media practitioners last week revealed she is one in a million.
Not too long ago the media was flooded with the news of the critical life saving mission embarked upon by her barely few months she was posted to the division for rescuing and footing the medical bill of an Armed Robbery attacked victim under her division.
The victim, Friday Ajabor, was on September 19, around 8pm, waylaid by a two-man gang who disposed him of his valuables and shot him in the abdomen.
Policemen from Ogudu Police Station, led by officer Kalu arrived at the scene and rushed the victim to two hospitals where he was rejected.
The victim was reportedly admitted in the Intensive Care Unit of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in Ikeja, where he underwent surgery, the cost of which was paid by the DPO.
Since her gesture was uncommon among the rank and file of the police officers for going extra miles to save a soul, She will continue to attract media, NGOs and stakeholders special recognition and engagements.
My duty is to protect lives and properties
The Former Police Command in South East , Spokesman, Kalu gesture changed many misperception and misconception about the Nigeria Police. When asked about what triggered her action , she said it was not new to her , she wasn’t the first officer that have done such among the police.
She emphasised that police core duty is to protect lives and properties. Adding that her mum die because of lack of medical care coupled with other chronological explanation prompted her to rise several hundred of thousands among friends and friends to save Friday, who is not related rather known to her before the sad incident.
Ogudu Police Station Challenges
With her humanitarian action, one would have thought her division does not have operation constraint but meeting her in person bring back to mind the metaphorical phrase “Don’t judge a book by its cover”. Consequently, She said lack of operation vechicle and the need to fix the breakdown vehicles are some of the challenges confronting her division and welcome supports from hosting community stakeholders in helping to fight crime to a standstill.
She maintained that bail is absolutely free as the law states. Kalu, However, added that people can help the police with fuel, generating set and maintenance, stationery among others to help them discharge their duty effectively. She dissociated the division from any form of indisminate arrest of residents, motorists and other road users nor hold brief for the Area H command officers who were in the news for arresting a software engineer.
Community Policing is the way to go
Speaking on child abuse, car brain box theft, cultism and forms of social ills and information management. she said the DPO is the most trusted person the community can approach for any vital information on suspects perpetrating this crimes. Adding that the best way to protect the people is the community policing. She urged the community to feel free to approach her in order to jointly curb crime.
Hospital rejection of Gunshot Victims
The Kosofe Pride Police officer explained that under no circumstances the hospital are not permitted to reject any patient. they were expected to treat gunshot victim, others and after the treatment then invite the police for screening stressed further that provision has been put place to take care of such development in the state.
