The rate of child abuses in our community or the city either by error, omission or commission is daily on the increase which the end consequent is destruction of lives and increase social ills degree.
Sequel to these recurring developments, the Kosofe chapter of the Child Protection Network (CPN) organised a maiden programme” Awareness campaign on child abuse at Ogudu Primary Health centre , Ogudu , Kosofe , Lagos State. on Thursday , November 14, 2019. Where the chairperson, kosofe local government, Mrs. mosunmola sofola, ably represented by Mrs. S.O Jactus speaking at the 1 day strategic meeting on violence against children said: “I esteem it a great honour to be called upon by the organizers of this forum to share ideas with members of the public on the malicious problems of violence against children.
“I have overwhelming passion for the intellectual, capacity development and general well-being of our children. I therefore want to thank the organizers of this event, the CHILD PROTECTION NETWORK (CPN) for bringing the issue of violence against children to the front burner of social discuss and thereby according me the privilege of sharing one or two ideas with members of the public on this. I hope that by the end of this seminal discussion here today, we would be able to proffer enduring preventive measures and also further increase the awareness of our people to this hydra-headed social monster insidiously ravaging the capacity, intellectual and social development of our children.”
“Violence against children is a form of abuse where a child is subjected to inhuman physical, sexual and emotional assault. It is a social menace that is global in nature affecting children of different socio-economic, racial, ethnic, religious, educational and cultural backgrounds. It is a social plague judging from its deep-seated short and long term negative effects on its victims. It is now an epidemic going by the humongous number of children reported to have been brutalized and traumatized; and by the alarming rate by which it is being reported daily on the social, electronic, and print media.”
“The prevalence and frequency of the occurrence of this social ill in our communities is highly worrisome and detestable and calls for drastic preventive and punitive measures. This is imperative because the Sofola administration places great premium on the capacity, intellectual and educational development of the children in our Local Government Area. While we also firmly hold that the economic and technological growth and development of our country are totally dependent on the mental, intellectual and academic capacity of our children. This is why Kosofe Local Government has vigorously expended astronomical amounts of money on educational infrastructural development; while developing the intellectual capacity of our children by organizing and sponsoring academic competitions and various skills acquisition programs,” Says Sofola.
Noting further she said ” If drastic preventive and punitive measures are not taken on time to arrest this ugly trend we may definitely find ourselves as a community of people heading towards societal retrogression. I am afraid we are already on the threshold with the epidemic rate of child abuse occurring on a daily basis. Even as we speak, the beauty and innocence of a child is being brutally violated somewhere in our communities. The ugly incidence may either be reported or not. The innocent child may either find justice or not. But in the long run it is the society that is badly affected as a result of our negligence and carelessness to collectively protect the defenseless hapless child.
is it not high time we rose from our couch of societal inertness and collectively protect the well-being of our children by totally eradicating child abuse in our communities? Whereas, it takes the entire community many years to properly nurture a child, it only takes barely a minute to destroy a child. Consequently, solutions to this epidemic of child molestation actually lie within the community itself. And we are the community.
“We should therefore endeavour to be our brothers’ keeper by constantly watching over and monitoring the lives of the vulnerable children in our communities. As a people, we have the collective responsibility to prevent child abuse in all ramifications because it is totally preventable.
On preventive measures Kosofe First lady say community taken ownership of the advocacy campaign and being a whistleblower “is better than punitive measures which only punish after child molestation havoc has been committed. In order to realize this, we must continue to initiate public enlightenment programmes and increase the awareness of the people in different areas of our communities such as schools, mosques, churches, club houses, public places, social gatherings etc. to the inherent danger and undesirability of child abuse in our communities, and emphasizing the idea that reduction of violence against children is the collective responsibility of everyone.”
Earlier speaking at the programme Child Protection Network (CPN) Kosofe Coordinator, Mr. Rasheed Awofeso in his welcoming address said the increase menace within our community and our city necessitated awareness campaign on child abuse.
Awofeso, explained all the forms of abuses and how it could be prevented in the community and city.
He gave the scorecard of the achievement made by Kosofe CPN for the past 4 years. Funding and the timescale of the prosecution of the perpetrators in the family court and parents, neighbour aiding and and albeting child violators by refusing to a mandated reporter are some the challenges affecting war against child abuse.
Participants at the well attended programme commended Lagos state government and the family court on the way they treat child abuse case. However, urged that time scale should be adopted for the suspect trial like 180 days set to dispense election matter at the tribunal. So as to , put more important on the menace and for the community or city to know how serious child abuse offence being taken with levity is dear to the government.
The Programme was attended by Kosofe Local Government chairperson, Mosunmola Sofola ably represented by Mrs. S.O jactus, Ministry of Youth and Social Development(MYSD), Ayo Ajeniya, Nigeria police under Ogudu command, NSCDC, LNSC, CPN Volunteers, Community based organization, NGO’s, CDA, market representatives among others.
