The Police in Lagos on Tuesday arraigned three men, Masadu Shaibu, 28, China Nwafor, 25, and Usman Aliu, 25, at Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly beating a security personnel.
They are standing trial on two-count charge of conspiracy and assault occasioning harm to which they pleaded not guilty.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Donjour Perezi, told the court that the defendants who reside in Alapere, Ketu area of Lagos, beat the complainant, Emmanuel Awotola, attached to the Neighbourhood Safety Corps, Agboyi, Ketu.
According to him, the defendants committed the offence on Dec. 19 at Igboho Street, Alapere Ketu in Lagos.
Perezi said that the defendants were harassing people passing by with cutlass and knife at Mile 12 under bridge, NAN reports.
He said in a bid to stop them, the complainant confronted them and they attacked him with a cutlass.
“They cut him on his head and he sustained a deep wound causing him harm,’’ he said.
The offence, he said, contravene Sections 173 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 173 prescribes three-year jail term for assault occasioning harm.
The Magistrate, Mrs Bukola Mogaji, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum N100, 000 each and two sureties in like sum.
Mogaji said that the sureties must be gainfully employed and must also show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
