About four years ago i was utterly shocked when i got a text from MTN offering me Some ‘free’ airtime for consistently spending more than twenty K, monthly on the purchase of air time.
I was shocked because i didnt realise i spent that much monthly. I think they have since reviewed that package.
Today, with the growing importance of the internet, i spend more money on data than on fueling my car, on monthly cable television subscription and even on food. I probably spend twice that amount in 2020.
When Adenuga and co applied for GSM licenses over a decade ago, i doubt they anticipated revenue from data will be much more than that for talk time.
Today, people are buying ‘recharge’ every second. we down load music, pay bills, access search engines, read new papers, access social media etc only by accessing the net. This means we must recharge. Telecommunication companies are making money in truck load.
So when they run adverts that say data is oxygen, they know exactly what they are talking about. Data is the new oil!
