Yoruba race has always been a wonderful race which thrives on community bonding and communal living. We so much believe that what belongs to one, belongs to the other as well. That is why our system of extended relationship has helped us to stay together and achieve a lot in oneness.
Yoruba believe in ‘alajobi or ajobi’ which simply means bonding through birth or of one birth. This concept is what makes an extended family reach out and be on the look out for each other no matter the distance.
Therefore, that yoruba race is coming together now to form a common security consciousness is not something strange, it has always been part of us.
In the time past and till now there has always been the Agbekoyas which started as a union organised to foster unity among the farmers and also to fight for their rights, the oodua peoples congress which was formed to shield the Yoruba people from external aggression and we also have the hunters, the vigilante groups etc. All these groups function so well at their local levels and are still functioning well but from a remote angle and at different intervals. Therefore, the need to have something that can bring all these formidable groups together to function optimally can never be over emphasised and this is what we have in AMOTEKUN.
AMOTEKUN is the very best collective response that Yoruba has in terms of regional and collective security and it has come to stay. I wonder why the much attack on amotekun when it is only established to fight crime. Whosoever, find it unbearable that someone fenced his house needed to be asked what he is gaining from the porous nature of that compound before fencing.
Amotekun is here to stay and to flourish. My only concern is that we need to speak to ourselves and make sure it is functioning based on the purpose of why it is created.
It should not become a tool in the hands of politicians to settle political scores or to shield corruption. If we can adhere to the purpose of security, and for security measures I think we are good to go.
I appeal to every omoluwabis to give in their support to this group and work together with them to be able to perform optimally. My appeal also goes to our mothers, I mean real ‘Abiyamos.’ to stand by Amotekun in this trial periods and tie and retie their wrappers so that Amotekun will gather maximum supports. The clerics also should endeavor to pray and bless us along that line because failure to one is failure to all. Oodua a gbe wa o!
