PRESS RELEASE ON THE CORONA VIRUS PANDEMIC BY HON. (PRINCE) ROTIMI AGUNSOYE TO THE PEOPLE OF KOSOFE FEDERAL CONSTITUENCY
My good people of Kosofe Federal Constituency, events of the last couple of weeks have prompted the need to address you on the Corona Virus pandemic. First, I want to commend the Federal Government for the good leadership they have provided us with the way they have been steering the affairs of state in this trying moment. If any man should be adjudged the hero of the war against this plague, he is no other than Governor Babajide Sanwoolu of Lagos. But for the proactive and anticipated moves of His Excellency and his team, Lagos being the most populated state and second home to all Nigerians would have ranked as one of the worst hit cities in the globe. My resounding applause again goes to the three council chairmen in my constituency for bringing Mr. Governor’s efforts to bear on Kosofe residents at the grassroots.
Dear constituents, the pathetic situation we presently find ourselves could have been avoided if the first cases had been patriotic enough in reporting early symptoms to the appropriate authorities and subjecting themselves to tests and treatments. Be that as it may, the onus lies on us to report further suspects to the nearest health authority in our locality. Beyond that, it is important we disregard the mischief makers spreading panic with the exaggerations and outright falsehoods flying around on the streets and our social media. I urge you instead to rely only on the accurate and timely information from relevant government agencies.
Let me in the meantime update you on the measures being put in place by governments at various levels to secure our people. In addition to the efforts made so far, the Federal Government in the last three days has released a special intervention fund to the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) for better equipment in meeting the challenges being faced at the moment across the length and breadth of Nigeria. Aside the new isolation centers being created by the Lagos State Government, it recently established food banks in all the 57 LGAs/LCDAs as a stop-gap measure for the near-total lockdown of daily activities in the Centre of Excellence.
In my own capacity as your elected Representative in the National Assembly, I have been working round the clock to complement government’s efforts at various levels and only a few days ago donated hand sanitizers, nose masks and other materials to curb the spread of this highly-contagious disease. All these measures are being put in place for your use and it is expedient you avail yourselves of these opportunities. More importantly, it is in everybody’s interest that you comply with government’s directives and public health guidelines by the federal and state health authorities bordering on personal hygiene and social distancing.
Much as I empathize with our people over the painful decisions that circumstances beyond government’s control have forced on us, I must be frank in letting you know that many more drastic measures might regrettably follow in the coming days if and when the need arose. However, if there is any positive thing to be drawn from this pandemic that has grounded our national life to a halt, it is our unity in the face of adversity. We need more of this in protecting our country always. Remember, this is a duty we all owe to our fatherland.
Let me at this point reiterate my commitment to your welfares. Since you and I make up the government, I shall be counting on your continued supports and cooperation in the tough days ahead as we navigate our way out of this difficult situation. The resilient spirit in us has never bowed to challenges. So, do not panic. We defeated Ebola once. Together again, we shall overcome this common enemy.
Thank you all and God bless.
HON. (PRINCE) ROTIMI AGUNSOYE MHR, KOSOFE FEDERAL CONSTITUENCY
