Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has issued a statement urging residents to appropriately bag and containerise their wastes ahead of the forthcoming Eid-el Kabir festivities. The aim is to maintain a clean and hygienic environment throughout the celebrations.

In the statement released by Mr Kunle Adebiyi, the Executive Director (Finance) of LAWMA, comprehensive measures have been put in place to ensure the effective management of waste during the festive period. Private sector participants (PSP) operators have been assigned the task of cleaning up the city and will maintain a round-the-clock schedule.

Adebiyi stressed the importance of residents avoiding indiscriminate waste dumping on road medians, canals, uncompleted buildings, and other unauthorised locations. He assured the public that LAWMA would intensify efforts to ensure that the festivities are observed in a clean and healthy environment.

“LAWMA is determined to combat improper waste disposal practices that contribute to environmental degradation within the metropolis, especially during the forthcoming Eid-el Kabir celebrations,” said Adebiyi. He further stated that PSP operators have been mandated to provide efficient services, with LAWMA providing backup services in areas where noticeable service gaps exist. District and operational heads have also been assigned 24/7 operational duties to support service providers across the state.

To enhance transparency and accessibility, LAWMA will publish the names and phone numbers of management team members assigned to monitor the environment during the festive period in national dailies. Residents are encouraged to contact LAWMA’s dedicated waste management helpline, 07080601020, or the toll-free line, 617, for any waste management-related matters.

Additionally, Adebiyi advised motorists to exercise caution while driving to ensure the safety of sanitation workers who will be busy cleaning the roads and highways during the festive period.

Adebiyi extended warm felicitations to residents of the state and appealed to them to refrain from any actions that could have a negative impact on the environment during the celebrations.
