In a dramatic session on Thursday, Speaker Mudashiru Obasa of the Lagos State House of Assembly responded swiftly to the impassioned appeal of Hon Sanni Ganiyu Okanlawon, representative of Kosofe Constituency 01. The assembly convened to address the distressing incident in which police officers and Ministry of Environment personnel reportedly carried out demolitions in the Oworonshoki area of Kosofe 01.

Hon Okanlawon recounted the devastating consequences of the demolitions, which left numerous families displaced and their livelihoods shattered. Omolabake, Gandonu, and Coker Estates, integral parts of the Oworonshoki community, were said to be severely impacted.

Urging his fellow legislators to act swiftly, Hon Okanlawon beseeched the House to establish an ad hoc committee to investigate the matter. The appeal did not fall on deaf ears, as Speaker Obasa promptly took the initiative to address the issue. He directed the assembly clerk, Olalekan Onafeko, to dispatch letters to Shola Jejeloye, head of the task force responsible, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of the Environment. The letters implored an immediate halt to further demolitions in Oworonshoki, pending the outcome of the House’s investigation.

In a notable response, Speaker Obasa proceeded to form a five-member ad hoc committee to probe the controversial demolitions. The committee is comprised of Hon Sanni Okanlawon, Hon Akinsanya Nureni, Hon Adewale Temitope, Hon Femi Saheed, and Hon Aro Moshood. This step was taken following the presentation of a ‘Matter of Urgent Public Importance’ by Hon Sanni Okanlawon, a move that underscored the pressing need for action.

The Oworonshoki demolitions have sparked concerns among both lawmakers and citizens, with many calling for transparency and accountability in the process.
