Sheikh AbdulGaniu Afolayan, a respected Islamic cleric in Lagos, has responded to allegations of his involvement in anti-Islamic activity that circulated in a viral video. The Imam of Oluwalogbon Mosque in the Somolu area of Lagos has clarified the circumstances surrounding the video that led to his temporary suspension from all Islamic-related activities by the Somolu Muslim Community.
In a detailed account before the Disciplinary Committee set up by the Somolu Community, Sheikh AbdulGaniu Afolayan recounted an unsettling experience in 2018. He explained that he was spiritually attacked by an unidentified member of the mosque, which resulted in serious health issues. Despite seeking medical assistance and exploring various avenues for recovery, including both conventional and spiritual remedies within the Muslim community, his condition remained dire.
Facing mounting medical expenses and with no relief in sight, the Imam shared that he ultimately turned to an outskirt church for healing. He clarified that he attended only the healing and prayer sessions, not the regular church services. His attendance at these sessions was for the purpose of seeking healing, not for worship, as some had speculated.
Sheikh Afolayan affirmed that his wife visited the church to express gratitude on his behalf after his recovery. He stressed that this visit did not affect his faith and that he has not attended the church since regaining his health.
The incident stirred controversy within the Somolu Muslim Community, prompting divergent opinions. Some members called for his removal, while others urged compassion, understanding the challenging circumstances he faced at the time.
As a result of the ongoing investigation and discussions, the Somolu Muslim Community has temporarily suspended Sheikh AbdulGaniu Afolayan from conducting daily congregational prayers as Imam, teaching Quranic verses to children (Mudrassa), and leading his usual Sunday Prayer Group session. The suspension will remain in place until further notice.
Additionally, the Disciplinary Committee outlined several measures for the Imam to demonstrate his commitment to his faith and community. These measures include observing a compulsory bath for purity, making an open declaration of allegiance during the Jumat service, and adhering to the guidance provided by the community.
