The Oje Egungun festival recently unfolded in the Oworonshoki area of Kosofe, revealing a cultural and spiritual extravaganza that has stood the test of time for over 200 years. Organized by HRM Babatunde Saliu, Elebo 2 of Oworonshoki, also known as the Oloworo, the festival is a dynamic celebration that bridges the realms of the living and the ancestral.
This triennial event, lasting for three months, immerses the community in a rich ancestral reverence, Yoruba heritage preservation, and communal unity. Elaborate preparations precede the festival, involving intricate rituals and the crafting of vibrant costumes, each representing specific ancestors or spirits.
During the festival, participants, believed to be vessels of the spirits, engage in energetic dances conveying messages and blessings. Traditional drumming, chanting, and vibrant processions through the streets accompany these performances, creating an immersive experience for both participants and spectators.
The Oje Egungun festival is not merely a cultural showcase; it serves as a conduit for spiritual communication, bringing blessings, prosperity, and protection to the community. The event strengthens community bonds and attracts visitors eager to partake in and understand Yoruba traditions.
The Head of Oje for men is called “Alapini” whom is Chief Isiaka Lateef

Names of Egungun in oworonshoki include Olori Egun of Oworonshoki which is called Ayegunju, Adasofunjo, Adinimodo, Olediyo, Ajogbashile, Ariwodola, Ayelabola, Lebe, Labo, Ologbojo, Abobado, Ajafolowo, Alagbe, Adeori okin and Esorun respectively.
Dignitaries gracing the occasion included HRM Babatunde Saliu, Elebo 1, Olori Bukola Maryam Saliu, Osolo of Asolo, HRM Kabir Agbabiaka, and representatives from the Kosofe Local Government, including Supervisor for Tourism Hon. Oduwaye Odubamise and SSA on Tourism Hon. Desmond Ojajuni.
