Gbenga Ogunbote, the head coach of Shooting Stars Football Club, embraced one of his players, Ehi Victor, in jubilation after their hard-fought 1-0 triumph over hosts Doma United Football Club in Gombe on Wednesday.
The highly anticipated Match Day 25 fixture of the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) unfolded at the Pantami Township Stadium, where the visitors clinched a crucial victory. This win marked a significant moment for Shooting Stars, who have been striving to secure an away victory throughout the season.
Reflecting on the match, Coach Gbenga Ogunbote described the win as “long overdue,” emphasizing the challenges his team had encountered in previous away fixtures. “It was actually a difficult match, but we give glory to God (that) we won,” he expressed. “We have been working towards getting an away win all this while, and thank God we got it today.”
Monday Gideon’s decisive goal in the 45th minute sealed the victory for Shooting Stars, propelling them to the 7th position on the NPFL standings with 37 points from 25 matches. In contrast, Doma United slipped to the 12th spot with 33 points after 25 games played.
Despite the disappointment of defeat, Doma United’s head coach, Akinade Onigbinde, declined to comment on the match outcome, stating, “I will not grant any interview. What do you want me to say? Write whatever you want to write.”
As Shooting Stars basked in the glory of their hard-earned victory, they now set their sights on their next challenge against Remo Stars on Sunday, with Coach Ogunbote affirming their determination to maintain their winning momentum.
