Councilor Taiwo Oyekan of Lagos Island Local Government Legislative Arm has spearheaded a groundbreaking initiative, setting a new standard for public service across Lagos State. His recent endeavor, a N10 million economic empowerment program, has garnered widespread acclaim and sparked calls for emulation from fellow councilors.

Hon. Prince Taiwo Ajibade Oyekan, Deputy Leader of Lagos Island Local Government Legislative Arm and representative of Ward C1, unveiled the initiative aimed at uplifting residents amidst the prevailing economic challenges. The program saw the distribution of financial assistance and essential provisions to residents of Isale Eko, Olowogbowo, and Oko Faji Communities.

A total of 200 households received N25,000 each, while 100 widows and 100 elderly men were each gifted N25,000. Additionally, five artisans were provided with sewing machines to enhance their livelihoods, and 150 residents received 5 kg bags of rice, all part of Hon. Oyekan’s comprehensive social welfare schemes.

Speaking on the necessity of the Economic Intervention Programme, Hon. Oyekan emphasized its role in alleviating poverty and improving residents’ standard of living, underscoring the importance of proactive community engagement in times of economic hardship.

The initiative has not only garnered praise from social commentators but has also sparked a call to action for other councilors across the state to follow suit. Rotimi Ademola highlighted Hon. Oyekan’s dedication, contrasting it with the complacency of some councilors who fail to prioritize community development.

Engr. Olusola Adedayo echoed this sentiment, urging fellow councilors to step up and make meaningful contributions to their respective wards, independent of any bureaucratic constraints. He emphasized the need for councilors to take initiative and emulate Hon. Oyekan’s proactive approach to community service.

In response, Oloye Salami Oluwaseun rallied councilors in the Kosofe federal constituency, urging them to seize the opportunity to give back to their communities. He challenged councilors to transcend political affiliations and prioritize the welfare of their constituents, admonishing against the misuse of public funds for personal gain.

Amidst the praise for Hon. Oyekan’s initiatives, observers highlighted the importance of tangible community impact over superficial displays of allegiance, calling for a shift in the paradigm of councilor-executive dynamics towards genuine grassroots development.
