The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has introduced a new self-service mobile application allowing Nigerians to modify personal details including date of birth, name, address, email, and phone number. The announcement was made through the official handle of the organization on Saturday, heralding a convenient solution for individuals seeking to update their National Identification Number (NIN) records.

According to NIMC’s official post, individuals no longer need to visit a NIN enrollment center to make modifications, as the new self-service app provides a user-friendly platform for such changes. The post encouraged citizens to take advantage of the convenience offered by the app, emphasizing its accessibility and efficiency.

The self-service modification portal, accessible at selfservicemodification.nimc.gov.ng, outlines the associated costs for different modifications. The fees are pegged at N1,522.5 for modifications such as name and address, while date of birth modification incurs a higher cost of N16,340. Additionally, changing email addresses is priced at N1,522.5.

However, despite the convenience offered by the self-service app, some Nigerians have expressed dissatisfaction with the associated fees, particularly the high cost of changing the date of birth. Critics argue that the fees are exorbitant, posing a financial burden for traders, artisans, and other individuals who may find it challenging to afford such amounts.

The criticism highlights concerns regarding accessibility and affordability of essential services, with calls for NIMC to reconsider the fee structure to ensure equitable access for all citizens.
