The Agboyi-Ketu Local Council Development Area (LCDA) in Lagos State has garnered praise from the Lagos State House of Assembly (LAHA) for its innovative “Traders Support Scheme,” which disbursed N22.5 million to 450 traders in other to alleviate the economic strain faced by its residents.
Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa (4th Right) and Mr Dele Oshinowo, Chairman, Agboyi-Ketu LCDA (3rd Right) at the launch of Traders Support Scheme of the council on Thursday in Lagos.
The LAHA Speaker, Mr. Mudashiru Obasa, commended the initiative during the inauguration of the poverty reduction scheme named “We Lift 450 Petty Traders.” Executive Chairman of the LCDA, Mr. Dele Oshinowo, spearheaded the program, which was attended by the LAHA Speaker.
Under the scheme, 450 traders selected from various markets and streets within the council area will receive monthly cash support of N50,000 each. Speaker Obasa hailed the initiative as a vital step in supporting residents during challenging economic times, emphasizing the importance of local governments reaching out to uplift their communities.
Encouraging other local government chairmen to emulate Oshinowo’s example, Obasa emphasized the importance of prioritizing the needs of the people and delivering tangible benefits. He urged beneficiaries to utilize the support to create wealth and contribute positively to society.
In his address, Chairman Oshinowo underscored the scheme’s alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He emphasized that the selection of beneficiaries was based on genuine need, with no political considerations.
Among the attendees, former Executive Chairman of Agboyi-Ketu LCDA and former Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Lagos State, Mrs. Yetunde Arobieke, praised Oshinowo for his commitment to uplifting the less-privileged.
Expressing gratitude, beneficiary Mrs. Adeyinka Olawale highlighted the significance of the support in boosting her petty trade and enhancing her income.
