Olusegun Otukomaya, a Nigerian residing in the United Kingdom, has recently shared his cautionary tale following his departure from the workplace. Through a thought-provoking Facebook post titled “Who is Competing with You in Private or Secretly?”, Otukomaya imparts valuable advice on the importance of discerning individuals within one’s social and professional circles who may harbor ulterior motives.

In his candid reflection, Otukomaya emphasizes the necessity for individuals to exercise caution when sharing their plans, visions, and successes. “Bear in mind that we live in a world that is highly competitive,” he asserts, urging others to be astute and sensitive in determining whom they confide in.

Otukomaya recounts a troubling incident upon his announcement of relocating to the United Kingdom. He alleges that his director, upon learning of his plans, maliciously interrogated colleagues, insinuating that Otukomaya had divulged confidential information. This deliberate attempt to tarnish his reputation left Otukomaya feeling betrayed and unjustly accused.

“I knew he disliked me,” Otukomaya admits, reflecting on his interactions with his director. “I was smart enough to discern that early and hide my plans from him and others.” His experience serves as a stark reminder that not everyone in one’s professional environment or social circle harbors genuine goodwill.

Emphasizing the importance of discretion, Otukomaya warns against naively trusting colleagues as friends and cautions that not all friends sincerely desire one’s success. He stresses the need for vigilance and discernment in selecting confidants, as some individuals may covertly harbor competitive intentions.
