In a bid to tackle the escalating cost of food items across the country, the Presidency has called upon Nigerians to embrace subsistence farming as a sustainable solution. The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, emphasized this directive during a meeting with online editors under the Association of Corporate Online Editors (ACOE) in Abuja.
Reflecting on historical initiatives aimed at bolstering agricultural production, Onanuga referenced former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s ‘Operation Feed the Nation’ launched in 1976. He underscored the necessity for self-sufficiency in food production, citing past challenges during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration when shortages of essential commodities like rice, milk, and sugar prompted governmental interventions.
“While acknowledging the current hardships faced by Nigerians, Onanuga expressed optimism about the government’s ongoing agricultural investments yielding positive results in the coming year,” stated Mr. Martins Odiete, Chairman of ACOE, who disclosed details of the meeting. Onanuga emphasized that despite global economic cycles affecting living costs, the government remains committed to alleviating citizens’ hardships through strategic policies.
Highlighting the importance of collaboration between the presidential media team and ACOE, Odiete stressed the critical role of accurate and responsible information dissemination in serving the public interest. He affirmed the association’s dedication to upholding journalistic integrity, ensuring that partnerships with government entities facilitate transparent communication amid public expectations for reliable information.
The meeting concluded with assurances of continued cooperation in enhancing public awareness through effective news reporting practices, crucial in a digital age marked by rapid information dissemination.
