Lagos State Food Hub Generates N918 Million in 40 Days, Eases Food Costs

Lagos State’s innovative approach to food distribution has proven successful as the newly established Mushin food hub records impressive sales figures, totaling N918 million within just 40 days of operation.

Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Ms. Abisola Olusanya, announced this milestone during a press conference at the Alausa Secretariat in Lagos. The Mushin food hub, inaugurated by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in December 2023, aims to revolutionize food accessibility and affordability in the state, addressing both rising food costs and post-harvest losses.

“The impact of the Mushin food hub has been profound,” stated Olusanya. “Initially starting with market days on Saturdays, we later expanded to include Wednesdays in March. We now collaborate with 339 registered vendors offering a wide array of food items.”

Highlighting the hub’s economic impact, Olusanya detailed, “In the 40 days since its inception, we’ve facilitated transactions amounting to N918 million. This includes significant quantities of rice, garri, poultry meats, and eggs sold within the facility, effectively subsidizing food prices for Lagos residents.”

Emphasizing the hub’s role in data collection and market regulation, Olusanya explained, “For the first time, we have comprehensive data on the quantities and prices of specific food items entering the market. This transparency not only helps stabilize prices but also ensures quality control and reduces waste.”

She further underscored the government’s commitment to sustaining these initiatives despite operational costs, stating, “The absence of fees for vendors operating within the hub reflects our dedication to keeping food prices stable. As we expand to more hubs, we anticipate even greater benefits for residents.”
