The Lagos State House of Assembly should take decisive action to advocate for the inclusion of Lagos’ 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the Nigerian Constitution and upgrade them to full Local Government status. The LCDAs have been critical in managing the state’s massive population, particularly with many people relocating from other states for better opportunities. For over two decades, they have demonstrated their effectiveness in delivering local development, improving governance, and supporting the state’s infrastructure.
Incorporating these LCDAs as recognized local governments would enhance Lagos’ administrative structure and boost its economy. The current success of these councils proves their importance in decentralizing governance and addressing the growing needs of Lagos’ diverse population. Moreover, constitutional recognition and an upgrade would secure increased federal allocations, enabling greater investments in essential sectors like health, education, and infrastructure. By formalizing their role, Lagos would ensure equitable governance, transparency, and better service delivery for all its residents.
The move to formalize and upgrade the LCDAs is vital to safeguarding Lagos’ future and ensuring sustained development. With constitutional backing, these councils would be better positioned to meet the demands of Lagos’ unique administrative and economic landscape. The Lagos State House of Assembly must lead the charge in pushing for this necessary change to secure the state’s continued growth and prosperity. –
