A copy of the Lagos State Local Government Administration Law, purportedly signed on May 7, has surfaced, sparking renewed political debate over its timing, authenticity, and far-reaching implications ahead of the July 12 local government elections.

The unsigned but dated document, obtained by KosofePost, outlines sweeping reforms aimed at restructuring grassroots governance across the state. Among its provisions are tenure limitations for local government chairpersons and vice chairpersons, as well as new guidelines for eligibility and succession.

Although the Lagos State Government is yet to issue an official statement confirming the assent date, the emergence of the document has heightened tensions among political actors, particularly within the All Progressives Congress (APC). The law’s implementation could affect the candidacy of some incumbents already facing questions over their eligibility.

The timing of the law’s emergence—less than two weeks before the election—has further intensified scrutiny, with observers warning that its provisions could alter the political landscape in several Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).

Political stakeholders and legal experts are now calling on the Lagos State Government to publicly clarify the status and commencement date of the law to prevent confusion and ensure compliance with Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) guidelines.

As the situation unfolds, KosofePost will continue to provide updates on the political and legal ramifications of the contentious legislation.
