Outrage Trails Midnight Demolition in Oworonshoki as Sanwo-Olu Orders Suspension

By Bilesanmi Abayomi

The demolition of houses at Ojileru in Oworonshoki, Kosofe Local Government Area, has sparked outrage among residents, community leaders, and stakeholders, who described the exercise as inhumane, insensitive, and poorly managed.

Residents alleged that the operation, carried out in the middle of the night, took place without adequate notice or provisions for alternative housing. Critics accused the government of failing in its responsibility to protect citizens’ welfare.

“This is the fourth demolition issue in Kosofe in recent times, and yet, no meaningful relief has been provided. Politicians often rush to the scenes but leave without offering succour,” KosofePost noted in a reaction.

Community leader, Oloye Salami Oluwaseun, condemned the exercise and accused influential figures and traditional authorities of complicity. “This dastardly act cannot be exonerated from those close to the government. I pray Almighty God rewards the masterminds of this wickedness accordingly,” he said.

Following public outcry, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu reportedly ordered the suspension of the demolitions after the intervention of Hon. Sanni Ganiyu Okanlawon, member representing Kosofe Constituency I at the Lagos State House of Assembly. Hon. Okanlawon is expected to visit the affected community alongside the Permanent Secretary, Office of Physical Planning, Arc. Gbolahan Oki, to enforce the governor’s directive.

Reactions have continued to trail the incident. Engr. Olusola Emmanuel Adedayo, Publisher of MoschinoBlog, described the late-night demolition as “the most disgusting and inhumane act that can be meted out on people.” Ambassador Moyosore Badejo (MOG) said suspending the operation was not enough, urging the state government to provide a lasting solution to the land-grabbing menace in Oworonshoki.

Similarly, Omoba Rasheed Awofeso called for transparency on the ownership status of the land and advised prospective buyers to verify before purchase. “It is painful to see our people displaced in a moment. Above all, welfare packages should be provided as a form of soft landing,” he said.

As residents count their losses, stakeholders have urged the Lagos State Government to prioritize human dignity in its urban renewal agenda and provide a permanent solution to the recurring land disputes in Oworonshoki.
