Ogun State has recorded a landmark achievement as the inaugural ValueJet flight from the newly commissioned Gateway International Airport, Ilishan-Remo, successfully landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
The historic flight, which marks the official commencement of commercial operations at the airport, was flagged off by the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, alongside top government officials, aviation stakeholders, and dignitaries.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Governor Abiodun described the moment as a “dream turned reality,” noting that the Gateway International Airport is a symbol of his administration’s commitment to infrastructural development and economic diversification.
“This airport is not just a project; it is a legacy of vision, perseverance, and partnership. It represents our determination to open Ogun State to greater investment, tourism, and trade opportunities,” the governor said.
Strategically located in Ilishan-Remo, the Gateway International Airport is expected to serve as a major hub for commerce, tourism, and logistics in Southwest Nigeria, while creating thousands of direct and indirect jobs for residents.
The maiden flight was operated by ValueJet, an airline owned by Ogun-born businessman and sports investor, Hon. Kunle Soname, making it the first commercial carrier to fly out of the state’s flagship airport.
Stakeholders have described the development as a turning point in Ogun’s economic history, positioning the state as a vital link in Nigeria’s aviation and investment network.
The successful operation of the first flight, connecting Ogun State directly to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, signals the beginning of a new era for the Gateway State — one defined by innovation, connectivity, and inclusive growth.
