Kosofe Council Launches ₦100m Empowerment Scheme, Sparks Budgetary Controversy

The Executive Chairman of Kosofe Local Government Area, Hon. Moyosore Adedoyin Ogunlewe, has rolled out the first phase of the council’s ₦100 million Empowerment Initiative, with the maiden disbursement held at the council secretariat along Ogudu Road.

In the opening phase, selected beneficiaries received ₦100,000 each to support their small businesses and boost their livelihoods. The council said the programme—designed to run in four stages—will reach 1,000 residents, including artisans, widows, youths, and members of the general public.

However, the initiative has triggered controversy amid claims that the ₦100 million package was neither appropriated in the 2025 budget nor included in any supplementary budget. Addressing the concerns, the Leader of the Kosofe Legislative Council, Hon. Femi Oyesile, insisted that the empowerment expenditure did not require legislative approval before implementation.

The explanation has drawn mixed reactions from stakeholders, with some questioning financial oversight and compliance with due process.

Despite the brewing debate, council officials maintain that the initiative is intended to provide direct and meaningful support to residents. They added that subsequent phases would capture additional beneficiaries as the programme progresses.
