More than six months after the inauguration of local government administrations across Lagos State, the appointment of cabinet members for the state’s 20 local governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) continues to spark quiet but persistent debate within the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Party loyalists and grassroots organisers — who invested heavily in sustaining the APC’s dominance through material, financial, moral, and political support — are watching closely as lists of supervisory councillors and other cabinet positions slowly emerge. For many, the delay has intensified expectations for recognition while testing the patience of stakeholders eager to move from campaign mobilisation to governance.

Expectations versus service

Within party circles, opinions remain divided. Some members see appointments primarily as overdue compensation for years of loyalty and campaign sacrifice. Others frame the opportunity as a platform for service, visibility, and long-term political positioning rather than immediate reward.

Sources say the politician has now been shortlisted for a supervisory councillor role, a move that has drawn mixed reactions.

To some observers, the appointment represents a political downgrade for a high-profile aspirant. Yet others interpret it as a deliberate act of community service, noting that accepting a modest salary — reportedly below ₦500,000 monthly — could signal prioritisation of grassroots impact over personal financial gain. Supporters add that such officials often supplement community initiatives from their own resources, contributing to social welfare, local empowerment, and development programmes.

The symbolism of humility in public office

Political analysts point to Nigerian precedents where senior figures returned to lower-level offices to reconnect with their communities. A notable example is the late Chief Ogiri Ajene, who, after serving as Deputy Governor of Benue State, later pursued a councillorship role — a move widely interpreted as an expression of grassroots commitment rather than a reduction in status.

These examples continue to shape conversations within APC structures, reinforcing the argument that no elective or appointive position is inherently insignificant when approached as a direct avenue for community impact.
