Omoba Rasheed Awofeso has called for a collective national response to Nigeria’s growing security challenges, urging citizens, community leaders, and public officials to work together to address the rising cases of kidnapping and banditry across the country.

Speaking in an interview with KosofePost on Monday, Awofeso described insecurity as a challenge that affects all Nigerians, regardless of political affiliation, social status, or geographical location.

“Insecurity should be a concern to everyone because we are all affected by it, directly or indirectly,” he said.

According to Awofeso, the increasing prevalence of kidnapping and other violent crimes has created fear among citizens and negatively impacted social and economic activities.

He noted that many Nigerians now feel unsafe travelling or carrying out routine activities due to concerns about security.

“Kidnapping has become a thriving criminal enterprise in our society. In the past, we believed such incidents were confined to conflict-ridden or troubled areas. Sadly, the menace has gradually found its way into many communities,” he said.

Awofeso stressed that addressing the challenge would require decisive leadership, stronger security measures, and active participation from citizens and stakeholders.

The community advocate also weighed in on ongoing discussions about the role of prominent Nigerians in speaking out against insecurity.

According to him, there may be several reasons why some influential figures have chosen to remain less vocal, including concerns about personal safety, political backlash, or doubts about whether public criticism would lead to meaningful change.

However, he argued that public silence could be interpreted as indifference during a period when many Nigerians are grappling with security threats.

“In times when citizens face kidnapping, banditry, and other security threats, many Nigerians expect influential individuals to use their platforms to advocate for solutions, accountability, and the protection of lives and property,” Awofeso said.

He added that respected voices can help draw national attention to pressing challenges and contribute to conversations that promote lasting reforms.

“Active engagement by respected voices can help draw attention to the crisis and encourage collective action toward lasting security reforms. Credible voices may bring about credible changes,” he stated.

Awofeso called on government institutions, civil society organisations, traditional leaders, religious groups, and citizens to work together to improve security and restore public confidence across the country.

He maintained that overcoming the security crisis would require both effective governance and sustained public participation.
