The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed social media reports alleging that armed bandits invaded communities in Ibeju-Lekki, Imota, Oke-Afo and other parts of the state, describing the claims as false and misleading.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said the viral posts were unfounded and capable of causing panic among residents.

She clarified that there was no security breach, invasion, or coordinated attack on schools or communities across Lagos State, adding that security operatives remained on alert and maintained surveillance across all areas.

However, Adebisi confirmed that the circulation of the false reports led to a tragic incident in which a 24-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Kulaha Ayuba, was allegedly mistaken for a bandit and attacked by local youths.

According to her, the victim was fatally assaulted and his motorcycle stolen, while his body was later discovered in a swamp within the community.

She added that 15 suspects had been arrested in connection with the incident and are currently under investigation.

The police spokesperson condemned the spread of unverified information, warning that such reports could trigger panic, ethnic tension, and mob violence.

She urged residents to rely only on verified information from official channels and avoid sharing unconfirmed reports on social media.

“The Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Tijani, urges residents to remain calm, vigilant and go about their lawful activities without fear,” she said.

Adebisi reiterated that adequate security measures remain in place across Lagos State and assured residents of the command’s continued commitment to safeguarding lives and property.

The police warned that individuals responsible for spreading false or inciting information would be investigated and prosecuted.
