In a statement made available on Wednesday, the lawmaker’s message was focused on this year’s theme of the celebration: “Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of expression as a driver for all other human rights”. He emphasized the importance of press freedom in upholding the right to freedom of expression and participation in national governance, discussions about national issues, and the open expression of anxieties, goals, and aspirations, while complying with the law.

Hon. Okanlawon urged media professionals, including journalists, to recommit to consistently telling the truth and upholding the ethical standards of their profession while performing their duties. He called on them to create exceptional legacies for the upcoming generation of Nigerian journalists to build upon.

World Press Freedom Day is celebrated annually on May 3rd, providing a platform for media professionals to focus on press freedom and professional ethics concerns. It also serves as a reminder for governments to uphold their commitment to press freedom.

Hon. Okanlawon’s message of appreciation and commendation is well-received by media practitioners in Lagos State and Nigeria, as it reinforces the significance of their contributions to society.
