The Vice Chairman of the Kosofe Branch of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Bakare Wasiu Adeleye has emphasized the need for stakeholders to harness sports education as a means to address issues such as cultism and drug abuse among primary and secondary school students.
Speaking on Tuesday at the ongoing Councilor Elewedu Kids Cup competition in Agboyi Ketu LCDA, Kosofe, Lagos, Comrade Bakare highlighted the potential of education in combating social crises among young learners. He stressed the importance of continuous education and said, “The only thing that I feel we can do today is to educate, continuously educate our pupils and learners about the issue of cultism and drug abuse. This will help us eradicate these problems from our society. We must keep on educating them.”
Comrade Bakare expressed appreciation to Councilor Bashir Omogbohan Saheed, popularly known as Elewedu, the Majority Leader of the Agboyi Ketu LCDA Legislative Arm, for organizing the kids cup competition, which he deemed beneficial to the development of students’ education. He stated, “It is so amazing, and we all love it so much. This kind of competition has been hosted in previous years. The NUT and the general public of Agboyi Ketu greatly appreciate it and we love it.”
He further explained that the competition’s positive impact extends to both primary and secondary school students, contributing to their physical, mental, and emotional development. Comrade Bakare emphasized, “This competition will help us develop them physically.”
Encouraging all participants, sponsors, and stakeholders, he urged them to maintain their efforts and stated, “If this kind of competition is extended to primary and secondary schools throughout Lagos State, it will bring out the best in pupils across the state.”
Comrade Bakare’s remarks highlight the NUT’s recognition of the power of sports education in instilling important values, fostering healthy competition, and addressing societal challenges faced by students. Through continuous education and engaging activities like the Councilor Elewedu Kids Cup competition, stakeholders aim to shape a brighter future for young learners in Lagos State.
