Kumuyi Temitope Olubunmi, the founder of Impact Widows and The Vulnerable project, marked his birthday on July 3 by reaching out to widows, vulnerable individuals, and others in need in Lagos, Nigeria.
In an interview with Kosofe Post’s principal correspondent, Kumuyi, fondly known as Ijakoko, expressed his gratitude to the Almighty for the gift of life. He humbly prayed, “Dear God, on my birthday, I come to you and ask for your blessings. May you grant me peace and contentment as I continue to serve you faithfully. Almighty God, I thank you for the gift of life and all the wonderful moments you have offered me throughout my life.”
Seizing the opportunity of his birthday celebration, Kumuyi extended his support to widows facing poverty and physical abuse, among other challenges, in the Kosofe area.
The United Nations estimates that there are approximately 258 million widows worldwide, with nearly one in ten living in extreme poverty, often unseen, unsupported, and unmeasured by society. According to the 2015 World Widows Report by the UK-based NGO Loomba Foundation, Nigeria alone accounts for 3.5 million of these widows. The International Women’s Society’s 2019 estimation revealed that around 15 million widows in Nigeria are living in abject poverty.
Kumuyi’s heartfelt gesture is expected to alleviate the hardships faced by widows and other vulnerable individuals, providing them with much-needed support and care. His charitable act on his birthday anniversary demonstrates a commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of those in need.
