The Lagos East Senatorial District was filled with grief and somber reflections on Thursday as political topshots and dignitaries gathered to pay their last respects to Primate Charles Odugbesi at his service of song. The prominent figure, who was reported by Kosofe Post to have passed away on July 7 at the age of 73, had left a lasting impact on the lives of many, as friends and family paid glowing tribute to his life and achievements.
Among the dignitaries present at the Christian wake keep, held at his residence in Plot 2, Imose Close, Behind Wema Bank, Shagamu Road, lkorodu, were Former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, H.E Abiodun Ogunleye, GAC member and First Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Chief Reuben Olorunfunmi Basorun, and Member of the House of Representatives representing Kosofe Federal Constituency, Hon. Kafilat Adetola Ogbara, along with Hon. Babajimi Benson, the representative of Kosofe Constituency.
Political figures such as Former Member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Ikorodu 02, Hon. Saka Solaja, and Lawmaker representing Ikorodu 01, Hon. Gbolahan Ogunleye, also attended the service, along with Ikorodu Local Government Chairman Hon. Wasiu Adesina and Former Ikorodu West Vice Chairman, Hon. Sesan Dada, among others.
Prophet Dr. S. Oguntuga delivered a heartfelt sermon during the service, praising the deceased as a promise keeper and an individual to reckon with at any time. Primate Charles Odugbesi was not only a renowned politician but also a founder of a church, a core prophet, and a well-traveled individual. He was highly regarded as a good marriage counselor, known for reconciling countless couples. The late primate was a school proprietor, seasoned administrator, and mentor to hundreds of young actors in the entertainment industry. He was also a talented music composer, director, and promoter, with numerous records to his name.
The preacher emphasized that Primate Charles Odugbesi had lived a fulfilled life, echoing the biblical verse from Timothy 4:7 – “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
Family members and friends took the stage to honor the departed primate, with Alhaji Olushola Alli, a childhood friend, reminiscing about their cherished friendship. He lauded Odugbesi’s wisdom, passion, and peacemaking qualities, despite their differences in religious beliefs.
Morenike Odugbesi, the daughter of the deceased, shared touching insights into her father’s parenting style, revealing his focus on building boldness and confidence in his children. She acknowledged his belief in their potential for success and independence, even after his passing.
Hon. Saka Solaja, the Chairman of the Burial Planning Committee, also spoke warmly about Primate Charles Odugbesi’s upright and excellent counseling skills. He urged political stakeholders not to forget the bereaved family, emphasizing the importance of supporting the children left behind.
Expressing their deep appreciation, Hon. Niyi Odugbesi thanked the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwoolu, Chief of Staff to Lagos State Governor, Mr. Tayo Ayinde, GAC members, planning committee, and friends for their presence, prayers, and support during the funeral service.
