The Association of Telephones, Cable TV & Internet Subscribers of Nigeria (ATCIS) has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his intervention in halting the implementation of the Cyber Security Levy, urging for a complete cancellation of the levy to alleviate the burden on telecom subscribers.

National President of ATCIS, Hon ‘Sina Bilesanmi, popularly known as Ojueko, expressed appreciation for President Tinubu’s directive to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to put the implementation of the levy on hold. However, Bilesanmi advocated for the outright cancellation of the levy, emphasizing that its implementation would ultimately impact telecom subscribers.

Bilesanmi highlighted concerns regarding the lack of stakeholder engagement prior to the levy’s implementation, noting that ATCIS was not consulted or informed about the levy beforehand. He stressed the importance of collaboration between government agencies and advocacy bodies like ATCIS to ensure that policies are well-understood and beneficial to the masses.

In response to the House of Representatives’ directive to halt the implementation of the levy, ATCIS reiterated the need for proper orientation, enlightenment, and collaboration with relevant stakeholders to address the concerns surrounding the levy.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives mandated the CBN to withdraw its earlier circular on the levy, citing potential misinterpretation and discrepancies with the provisions of the Cybercrime Act. The Act specifies those expected to pay the levy, including GSM and telecom companies, internet providers, banks, insurance companies, and stock exchanges.

The President’s sensitivity to the plight of Nigerians was acknowledged, with assurances that he aims to avoid policies that add to the burden of the people. Consequently, a review of the levy was ordered to address discrepancies and ensure alignment with the Cybercrime Act.

ATCIS emphasized its commitment to consumer advocacy, citing significant progress and achievements in protecting the rights of telecom subscribers across Nigeria. The association’s advocacy efforts have been supported by financial contributions from members, loans, and external support, enabling impactful initiatives and reforms in the telecom sector.
