In an exclusive interview with KosofePost, sanitation expert Omoba Rasheed Awofeso has described the bio-digester system as the future of waste management in Nigeria, highlighting its affordability, environmental benefits, and suitability for diverse communities.
According to Awofeso, bio-digesters represent “the latest technology for managing human waste.” Unlike conventional septic tanks, they require less space, need no evacuation, and can last over 15 years without maintenance when professionally built.
“It is highly cost-effective and completely free of the offensive odours usually associated with septic tanks,” he said.
The system works by immediately decomposing waste once flushed, making it one of the most advanced and efficient waste management solutions available today.
Awofeso explained that bio-digesters are suitable for both dry and waterlogged environments. Being a closed system, they also prevent rodents, insects, and fleas from breeding around toilets.
He emphasized that beyond durability, bio-digesters are more affordable, sustainable, and environmentally friendly than septic tanks, making them ideal for Nigeria’s growing urban and rural communities.
When asked about the potential of bio-digesters in addressing Nigeria’s sanitation crisis, Awofeso was emphatic:
“It is one of the latest technologies designed to solve disposal problems in our society.”
However, he noted that widespread adoption remains a challenge due to low awareness.
Awofeso urged local councils and state authorities to intensify awareness campaigns, encourage adoption, and integrate bio-digesters into sanitation planning.
“Many people are yet to fully understand its benefits, but I believe more homeowners will embrace it as awareness grows. The bio-digester is truly the future of waste management,” he concluded.
