The House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee on Certificate Racketeering has commended the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, for its robust digital verification systems and commitment to institutional integrity during a working visit to the institution on Wednesday, October 15, 2025.
The delegation, led by Committee Chairman, Hon. Abubakar H. Fulata, included Hon. Iliyasu Aliyin, Hon. Yusuf Kure, Hon. Rabiu Yusuf, Esq., Hon. K. Abdul-Hakeem, Hon. Adams Ogene, and Hon. Faud K. Laguda. The lawmakers met with the university’s management at the Vice-Chancellor’s Conference Room, Babatunde Raji Fashola Senate Building, to assess LASU’s measures for curbing certificate and admission racketeering in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Professor Oseni Taiwo Afisi, said LASU had distinguished itself through a fully digitalised academic process — from admission to graduation — which makes manipulation or falsification of records impossible.
“LASU is Nigeria’s most digitalised university. Every process, from admission, registration, and assessment to certificate issuance, is transparent and automated. Our certificates carry unique QR codes for instant verification anywhere in the world,” she said.
Professor Olatunji-Bello added that the university recorded a 98 percent success rate in accreditation exercises between 2023 and 2025, reflecting LASU’s commitment to academic excellence and administrative integrity.
Also speaking, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Oluwatoyin Enikuomehin, noted that the integration of the National Identification Number (NIN) into the student registration process, alongside synchronisation with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) portal, ensures that only verified graduates receive authentic certificates.
“Every record is forensically verified both online and onsite. We’ve taken deliberate steps to make admission and certificate racketeering practically impossible,” he said.
The University Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel A. Fanu, reaffirmed LASU’s zero-tolerance policy toward fraudulent practices, stressing that all reported cases are duly investigated and sanctioned through legal and disciplinary procedures.
Other senior officials present included the Deputy Bursar, Mr. Adekunle M. Odunlami (representing the Bursar, Mr. Said Babatunde Olayinka); Director of Legal Affairs, Mrs. O. O. Boyejo; Deputy Registrar, Examinations and Records, Mrs. A. T. Meruwoma; Deputy Registrar, DVC Administration’s Office, Dr. Taiwo Mobee; and Principal Public Relations Officer, Ms. Pedetin Ogun.
In their remarks, members of the visiting committee described LASU as a “model of transparency, innovation, and credibility in West Africa.”
Chairman Hon. Abubakar Fulata commended the institution’s leadership and demonstrated confidence in its systems after a live verification test of a LASU certificate was successfully validated through its QR authentication platform.
He assured that the National Assembly remains committed to eradicating certificate racketeering nationwide and strengthening integrity within the education sector.
Delivering the vote of thanks, Mr. Fanu expressed appreciation to the lawmakers for their visit and proactive stance toward restoring public confidence in tertiary education.
