Residents of Agboyi Kingdom and stakeholders across Kosofe Local Government Area have expressed widespread joy and admiration following the elevation of the Olu of Agboyi, His Royal Majesty Oba Monsuru Abimbola Oladega, Akinmasa I, to the status of a First-Class (Grade A) traditional ruler by the Lagos State Government.
The elevation, announced during the week, officially reclassified the Olu of Agboyi stool as a Grade A Obaship, correcting what many residents described as a long-standing historical oversight. According to the state government, the decision recognises the stool’s deep-rooted heritage and its membership of the prestigious Akarigbere (White Cap) class within the traditional hierarchy of Lagos.
Reacting to the development, residents and community leaders described the elevation as timely, just, and well-deserved, saying it restores the Agboyi Kingdom to its rightful position among first-class traditional institutions in Lagos State.
In a statement signed by Prince M. O. Yusuf, Pa to the Olu of Agboyi, appreciation was extended to Allah, the Lagos State Government, and the people of Agboyi Kingdom for their unwavering support over the years. He also thanked family members, friends, and well-wishers for their prayers, describing the elevation as a moment of fulfilment, collective pride, and historic restoration for the kingdom.
“This elevation restores the Olu of Agboyi to his rightful place among First-Class Obas in Lagos State,” the statement read.
Several prominent individuals and groups have also sent congratulatory messages to the monarch. Omoba Awofeso Rasheed Ololade described the elevation as highly commendable, congratulating the traditional ruler and the entire Agboyi Kingdom on the milestone.
Similarly, President of Ta’awun Humanitarian Forum, Lagos, Taiwo Lasisi, said the elevation represents the fulfilment of a long-awaited royal aspiration, expressing confidence that the kingdom would record greater achievements under the reign of Oba Monsuru Akinmasa I.
In another message, the Kosofe School-Based Management Committee (SBMC), through its Chairman, Odeyemi Richard, hailed the monarch, describing the development as a historic landmark and a renewed source of pride for the Agboyi people.
Residents say the new status of the Olu of Agboyi is expected to strengthen traditional governance, promote cultural heritage, and boost development advocacy within Kosofe and Lagos State at large, as celebrations continue across the kingdom.
