FACTS TO BE KNOWN ABOUT THE OBASHIP (OLU AGBOYI) STOOL IN AGBOYI KINGDOM (PART I)

Agboyi as one of the ancient town founded centuries ago under Ikeja District Council of the then Colony, later Ikeja Division, before the creation of Somolu Local Government Area later Kosofe Local government Area and presently Agboyi-Ketu LCDA, Lagos State.

Agboyi Kingdom was founded by a Prince of Ile Ife a descendant of the 32nd Oni of Ile-Ife and that of Oduduwa. He was a blood relatives of Olofin Ogunfunmire the progenitor of Awori clans. His descendants derived their Crown from the throne of Olofin Ogunfunminire and that of Ooni of Ife which is the source of the Aworis and Yorubas in general.

However, Several BAALES have ruled the land before the people of Agboyi later adopted Oluship as the title of their Paramount ruler when the throne was elevated from ‘Baaleship to Obaship’ effectively in 1956. The Oluship title was derived from Omo Olu Nla. Olu is the supreme ahead of Community with beaded Crown and baeded staff “ADE and Opa ileke”

TRADITIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN AGBOYI LAND DURING THE OLD WESTERN REGION AND DURING THE CREATION OF LAGOS STATE

It is on record that there has been an existing traditional arrangement in Agboyi long before the creation of Lagos State.

The Olu of Agboyi managed the affairs of the Land alongside the Chiefs.

The Chiefs’ business was to enact laws, judge cases, discuss and advise the King (Olu Agboyi) in all matters affecting the kingdom.

The Osugbo in the history of the Yorubas play prominent roles in the administration of the Land. This structurd institution is headed by the Oluwo.

THE OLU AGBOYI IN COUNCIL

Olu-Agboyi-In-Council is the Apex traditional Institutions in Agboyi Land. It was formerly known as ‘Baale Agboyi and Chiefs’ in 1937 before it the stool of leadership in Agboyi was changed when the Baaleship status was eleveted to Oluship in 1956 by the then colonial Masters. All the Traditional and Customary chiefs known as ‘Iwarefa’ are members of Council.

LIST OF THE PAST AND THE PRESENT OLU OF AGBOYI LAND

  1. His Highness Oba Lawani Oyekan 1956-1962, Olu of Agboyi, Member Ikeja District Chieftaincy Council.
  2. His Highness Oba Yisa Durosinmi 1965-1990, Olu of Agboyi, Member Ikeja District Chieftaincy Council and Chairman Somolu LGA Obas and Chiefs.

3 . Alaiyeluwa Oba Disu Alagbe Akinlabi 2006-2012, Member Kosofe Joint Chieftaincy Committee and the Chairman Agboyi-Ketu LCDA Obas and Chiefs committee.

  1. HRM Oba (Engr.) MAO Oladega Akinmasa I 2020 till date.

The stool of Obaship in Agboyi was recognized with others nine (9) Obas in Ikeja division in 1965 as First Class title.
