Residents of the Maidan area of Ikosi Isheri Local Council Development Area of Lagos State have cried for help after heavy rainfall on Saturday destroyed a bridge linking the community with other communities in the area.
The Kosofe Post reports that the Maidan Orile Patele to Mile 12 pedestrian link bridge, constructed by the former military administrator (MILAD) of Lagos State, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa, collapsed on July 8, 2022.
A trader, Adewale Kamorudeen, who spoke to Kosofe Post during a visit to the community, explained that the rain, which fell for many hours, also affected the Eid Adha Muslim festival celebration and commercial activities.
He noted that it affects many government workers and traders who make daily use of the bridge to get to their houses.
“The rain today (Friday) was very heavy. The bridge we have been managing, which links us with other communities in the local government, has been destroyed.
“As a trader, I pass through that bridge on a daily basis for my trade, so I am appealing to the government and the good people of the state to help us,” he added.
According to a public servant who spoke on the condition of anonymity, getting to work will be difficult in the future due to the damaged bridge.
Because of the collapsed bridge, it will be very difficult for me and several residents to go to their place of work or office daily, as there is no other pedestrian bridge to pass.
“This issue calls for great concern because we are in the rainy season and if the rain continues to fall every day, people in the community will face difficulty in carrying out their daily activities,” she said.
The lawmaker representing Kosofe constituency 2, Honourable Femi Saheed, who earlier defied heavy downpour to visit the scene to assess the level of damage, assured the affected residents of immediate measures to alleviate their sufferings.
While commiserating with residents affected by the rainfall, he cautioned against the building of houses and the dumping of refuse on waterways.
