[NAN] The Lagos State Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Mrs Yetunde Arobieke has urged council chairmen to ensure constant engagements with the communities in getting feedbacks and yearnings from the people.
Arobieke made this known at the quarterly Town Hall Meeting organised by a Lagos Talks Radio Station, 91.3 FM, to celebrate its sixth year anniversary in Lagos on Tuesday.
The town hall meeting was organised by Agboyi-Ketu Local Government Development Area (LCDA) in partnership with Lagos Talks 91.3FM.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the meeting is “Politics as a Catalyst for Change: Bridging the Gap between the Governed and the Government.”
Reading her keynote address, Arobieke, noted that getting feedbacks from the residents at the grassroots would further bring governance closer to the people in the grassroots.
She noted that the residents also had a major role to play by holding their leaders accountable in ensuring they enjoy good governance.
The commissioner urged the youths in the country to participate in politics for them to actively involved in the nation building.
Arobieke noted that joining politics would avail youths in the country the opportunity to becoming an active voices in decision making process rather than showing nonchalance attitude in the nation building.
The commissioner urged the Nigerian youths to wake up to their responsibilities and get involved in politics, if they want to see positive changes in the country, as the future of the nation depends on them.
She said: “Non-commitment of the youths in the political process will make them be at the receiving end of actions taken by those in public offices.
“I am here to charge the youth that the success and the future of this country depends on them and much is expected from them than what they are offering presently.
“They should be a politician with dignity, pride and sanity, that is the hallmark. Just be a politician that is ready to contribute positively, not one that is after money or paraphernalia of office but one that is ready to deliver and serve the society.”
Speaking during the questions and answers session, the council’s Executive Chairman, Mr Dele Oshinowo said his administration was working assiduously to ensure that the meagre resources at his disposal was judiciously put into use.
Oshinowo explained that the meagre resources would be used for the progress of humanity and development of the capital projects in the area.
The chairman lamented that the resources were finite and not enough to solve all problems facing the development of the council.
He, however, announced construction works would begin on Irawo Road in the LCDA before the end of this year.
The chairman highlighted several achievements of his administration amidst a thunderous applause from the audience.
The Chairman, Agboyi-Ketu LCDA said that the council had in the past organised several empowerment programmes that had benefited the youths in the area.
Speaking, the lawmaker representing Kosofe 02, Mr Femi Saheed noted that poverty was when a nation or household cannot meet up with the standard of living.
Saheed lamented why citizens in the country was still experiencing poverty despite the country’s several mineral resources.
Mr Abayomi Olusanya, a member of the kosofe Political class also lauded the initiative and disclosed that the meeting will ensure residents are better informed on critical matters that affect effective governance.
Olusanya noted that the meeting would go a long way in ensuring harmony and productive relationship between Agboyi-Ketu residents and the council leadership .
The Managing Director, Megaletrics, the owner of 91.3FM, Mr Chris Ubosi, noted that the town hall meeting was conceived as an opportunity for citizens and politicians to speak about issues that are affecting the country. (NAN)
