The Anglican Primary School on Friday clinched the championship title in the inaugural Councilor Elewedu Kids Cup, a thrilling football tournament organized by Agboyi Ketu LCDA Legislative Arm Majority Leader and Councilor representing Ward D, Councilor Bashir Omogbohan Saheed, popularly known as Elewedu.
The final match of the competition, held on Friday at the Ajelogo Primary School, saw Anglican Primary School showcase their resilience and determination, as their striker scored an equalizing goal moments before the end of the second half. With the game ending in a 2-2 draw, the teams proceeded to a nerve-wracking penalty shootout, ultimately won by Anglican Primary School.
The Councilor Elewedu Kids Cup brought together ten public primary schools under the Agboyi Ketu region, supervised by the Kosofe Local Government Education Authority. The tournament witnessed intense competition, with Baptist Primary School securing the second position, and Ajelogo Primary School claiming the third spot after closely fought matches.
The elated Game Master of the victorious Anglican Primary School expressed his admiration for his team’s exceptional performance and credited Councilor Elewedu for organizing the competition. He called upon both private and public stakeholders to emulate Elewedu’s initiative in order to unearth more talented young athletes across the Kosofe Government Education Authority.
Councilor Elewedu, overwhelmed by the success of the tournament, extended his heartfelt gratitude to the Almighty. He commended Anglican Primary School for their outstanding display of skill and dedication, emphasizing that the Councilor Elewedu Kids Cup would not be a one-time event. He urged parents, guardians, and game masters to provide the necessary support to identify untapped sporting talent among children from a tender age.
The Alaketu of Ketu, HRM Oba Isiaka Balogun Oyero, who generously donated to support the Kids Cup, conveyed his congratulations to the winners and the organizer. Oba Isiaka commended the teams for their commendable start and finish and expressed gratitude to God for the absence of any injuries throughout the games. The monarch further encouraged parents to encourage their children to engage in various sporting activities to help uncover their hidden abilities.
Prior to the final, a captivating novelty match took place between the Agboyi Ketu Legislative Council (Team Elewedu) and the Agboyi Ketu Executive Council (Team Mayor), adding an extra element of excitement and friendly rivalry to the event.
