The Nigeria Police, Lagos State Command, has expressed deep concern over the recent surge in defilement cases within the state. According to the command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, a staggering 111 defilement cases were recorded between April and June 2023, alongside 14 rape cases and 56 cases of domestic violence.
SP Hundeyin, in a statement to the press on Wednesday, emphasized the command’s commitment to tackling this disturbing trend. He revealed that 99 suspects had already been charged to court during the same period, signaling a proactive stance against gender-based violence.
Highlighting the dedication of the Lagos State Police Command, Hundeyin shared that 83 cases were presently under investigation. This ongoing effort signifies their unwavering determination to ensure that perpetrators of domestic and gender-based violence face the full force of the law.
The remodeling of the command’s Gender Unit, orchestrated by CP Idowu Owohunwa, further underscores the commitment to combating gender-based violence. Hundeyin noted that the unit had been reinforced with additional trained officers, aimed at enhancing the quality of investigations conducted into gender-based violence cases.
Urging the public to speak up against abuse and report incidents of gender and sexual violence, Hundeyin assured the community that the police command was steadfast in protecting their rights. By encouraging victims and witnesses to come forward, the command aims to create an environment where survivors feel supported and empowered.
