Glamour, sportsmanship, and camaraderie converged at the grand finals of the 5th edition of the Saharalympics Games, a thrilling sports competition organized among the esteemed entities of the energy conglomerate, Sahara Group. Among the fierce contenders, Egbin Power Plc emerged as the champion, solidifying its position at the top for the second consecutive time, and the GenCo couldn’t be prouder of their accomplishment.
Egbin Power Team Captain, Osamuyi Asemota, in the middle lifting up the Saharalympics Trophy at the finals of the competition held at University of Lagos Sport Complex over the weekend.
The Saharalympics is a biennial spectacle that brings together employees from Sahara Group’s various entities spread across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. This year’s event featured a wide array of games, including football (male and female), volleyball, basketball, lawn table tennis, table tennis, Chess, Scrabble, Draft, Ayo, and track and field.
At the University of Lagos Sports Complex, Egbin Power showcased its unwavering dedication and prowess in various disciplines. The Chief Executive Officer, Mokhtar Bounour, expressed his excitement over the victory, attributing it to the team’s extraordinary teamwork, dedication, and consistent preparation.
“Our emergence as Champions in this 5th edition of Saharalympic proves that our commitment to being the best at what we do is our way of life at Egbin Power. We are constantly on top of our performance both on the job and in the recreational activities that form part of our work-life balance,” said Bounour, beaming with pride.
With grit and determination, Egbin Power’s athletes secured their victory by claiming top honors in the 100 meters female and male, 200 meters male, and Ping Pong race, amassing a remarkable total of 11 Gold, 7 Silver, and 4 Bronze medals in their impressive haul.
The celebration extended beyond Egbin Power, with Dr. Anthony Youdeowei, the Managing Director of Sahara Power Group, emphasizing that the Saharalympics stands as a symbol of Sahara’s commitment to excellence, fostering a spirit of unity, competitiveness, resilience, and team spirit.
Bethel Obioma, the Head of Corporate Communications at Sahara Group, shared that the Saharalympics embodies their collective passion for success and unity within the company. “It is a platform that nurtures our competitive spirit, enhances camaraderie, and strengthens the bonds that fuel our passion for being MAD, that is, making a difference,” Obioma remarked.
