Mr Adeola Adebanjo, an engineer, emerged as the Labour Party (LP) candidate for the upcoming Feb. 3 bye-election in Surulere Federal Constituency I, Lagos State. The primary election, held on Sunday in Surulere, saw Adebanjo triumph over two other aspirants.

Chairing the LP Electoral Committee, Mr Clement Ojukwu, announced that Adebanjo secured 12 votes, surpassing his closest rival, Dr Folaseye Adebayo, who received six votes, while the third aspirant, Mr Kenechukwu Osuji, garnered zero votes.

Urging Surulere residents to support Adebanjo, Ojukwu expressed confidence that the candidate, if elected, would deliver on the constituents’ expectations. In his victory speech, Adebanjo pledged to provide the constituency with qualitative representation, emphasizing wealth creation and opportunities for the youth.

Before the election, the aspirants signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and Peace Deal with the party. The tightly secured exercise was observed by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials.

The Surulere bye-election, scheduled for Feb. 3, was necessitated by the resignation of the former occupant, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila, appointed as Chief of Staff by President Bola Tinubu after winning in the 2023 general elections. The electoral process aligns with the timeline set by INEC, with public campaigns set to commence on Jan. 18 and conclude on Feb. 1.
