The Honorable Commissioner for Waterfront and Infrastructure Development, Arch. Ekundayo Yacoob Alebiosu, has lauded Governor Babajide Sanwoolu for the swift implementation of a ban on Styrofoam and other single-use plastics in Lagos State. Taking to his Instagram handle, Alebiosu expressed appreciation for the Governor’s bold steps aimed at curbing the environmental impact caused by the prevalent use of Styrofoam in the state.
Single-use plastic products, including Styrofoam, have long been identified as contributors to environmental degradation and health concerns. Styrofoam, a widely-used material for packaging and insulation, is non-biodegradable, posing a significant threat to Lagos’s precious waterfront and marine life under Alebiosu’s supervision.
The commissioner emphasized that Styrofoam’s non-degradable nature results in littering and pollution across Lagos, with the material often ending up in drainage channels and the lagoon. This not only harms the environment but also poses risks to marine biodiversity.
“Styrofoam is a menace to our environment and our health,” declared Alebiosu, urging residents to support and comply with the government’s ban. He advocated for the adoption of eco-friendly alternatives such as paper, cardboard, bamboo, or bioplastics. The commissioner called on the public to play an active role in educating others about the dangers of Styrofoam and the benefits of embracing sustainable practices.
