Lagos State government is gearing up to deploy the latest groin technology to safeguard coastline communities from the relentless onslaught of coastal erosion. Hon. Yacoob Ekundayo Alebiosu, Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, revealed this initiative during a press briefing over the weekend, citing the urgent need to protect vulnerable communities along the Lagos coastline.
Several communities, including Idotun, Origanrigan, Olomowewe, Itoke, and Asoroko in Ibeju Lekki, have already borne the brunt of coastal erosion, prompting the state government to take proactive measures. The proposed groin technology, utilized by other African countries, offers a cost-effective solution to combat erosion and preserve vital coastal habitats.
Groin technology involves the construction of structures perpendicular to the shoreline, aimed at mitigating the impact of wave action and sediment transport. These structures, known as groins, trap sand along the shoreline, helping to maintain beaches and shorelines while creating a stable environment for infrastructure.
Commissioner Alebiosu emphasized the inevitability of erosion as a natural phenomenon, stressing the importance of mitigation efforts. Collaborative efforts with the Netherlands, including engagements with Dutch companies, signify the state’s commitment to exploring viable solutions.
Addressing the scope of the project, Alebiosu outlined plans for the installation of groins along a 42km stretch from Alpha Beach to Ibeju Lekki, requiring approximately 105 groins. Despite the considerable cost implications, estimated at N12 billion per groin over a year ago, the government remains resolute in its mission to safeguard ancestral lands and livelihoods.
In addition to groins, long-term strategies such as replenishment, inspired by Dutch practices, are being considered to fortify the coastline against erosion. Alebiosu emphasized the need for collaboration with the federal government and private stakeholders to ensure the success of these initiatives.
While the adoption of groin technology holds promise, Alebiosu assured affected communities of the government’s thorough evaluation process to guarantee optimal effectiveness and cost-efficiency. With solutions on the horizon, the state government urges patience and solidarity in the collective effort to protect coastal communities from the ravages of erosion.
