Mr. Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), has vehemently condemned the Nigeria Labour Congress’s (NLC) picketing of the party’s National Secretariat, labeling it a “show of shame.” In a statement released by Mr. Obiora Ifoh, the LP National Publicity Secretary, Abure characterized the NLC’s actions as not only reckless but also a flagrant abuse of office and the law of the land.
Describing the events of Wednesday, Abure criticized the NLC’s forcible occupation of the Secretariat, vandalizing property worth millions of naira and unlawfully seizing the premises. He expressed deep concern over the loss of essential resources, including funds designated for salaries and official expenses.
Abure lamented the impact of the NLC’s actions on the party’s progress, particularly highlighting the disruption of preparations for the upcoming 2023 general election. He emphasized the need for constructive engagement and collaboration between the NLC and the Labour Party to address national issues effectively.
Asserting his disappointment in the NLC’s leadership under Joe Ajaero, Abure accused the organization of neglecting its duty to advocate for workers’ rights and failing to organize successful strikes or protests. He criticized Ajaero’s alleged interference in LP’s affairs, refuting claims of NLC ownership of the party and denouncing attempts to disrupt LP’s planned convention.
Abure clarified that LP had fulfilled all legal requirements for the convention, including notifying the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and stakeholders. He accused Ajaero of harboring hidden agendas and vowed to resist any attempt to undermine the party’s autonomy.
Abure reaffirmed LP’s commitment to democratic principles and urged the NLC to desist from further interference in the party’s affairs. He called for mutual respect and collaboration in advancing the interests of Nigerian workers and the nation as a whole.
