In a bid to combat the concerning trend of high failure rates in external examinations such as WAEC/GCE/JAMB, the Ta’awun Free Tutorials initiative emerged in June 2017 within the Kosofe/Ikeja Local Government area of Lagos. Spearheaded by the Ta’awun socio-religious organization and led by Director Taiwo Lasisi, the project aimed to groom candidates for success in crucial exams and provide mentorship to post-secondary students facing challenges in tertiary institutions.
Since its inception, Ta’awun Free Tutorials has become a beacon of hope for students in the region, with over 700 enrolled participants and approximately 200 successfully gaining admission to various tertiary institutions. The impact of the tutorial program has been palpable, extending beyond academic support to offer scholarships to deserving students who may not have had access to such opportunities otherwise.
The success of Ta’awun Free Tutorials can be attributed to the dedication and expertise of its tutors and mentors, including seasoned professionals in pedagogy such as Comrade Adeleke Abbass, A. Muhmin, and A. Salam A. Lateef. Additionally, mentors like Atanda L, Mrs. Opaniyi Racheal, and Hon. Abideen Fasasi have provided crucial support and guidance to students on their educational journeys.
Despite facing challenges such as inadequate funding and logistical issues, Ta’awun Free Tutorials has persevered thanks to the support of the community and local government. The organization calls for continued collaboration and assistance from stakeholders to further its mission of promoting education for all.
The recent support from officials like the councillor representing Ojota ward, Kosofe LGA, Hon. Baruwa Sulaiman, signals a promising future for students in the region. With a commitment to excellence in education and a dedication to nurturing young minds, Ta’awun Free Tutorials is making a tangible difference in the lives of students and shaping a brighter future for the community. Long live education in Kosofe/Ikeja LGs, long live Nigeria!
