In a recent virtual discussion on TikTok’s “Nigeria Protest, Are We Ready” hosted by Honey2sofunny, Bilesanmi Abayomi KOKO, the Publisher of KosofePost, voiced his dissent against the upcoming nationwide protests targeting the federal government amid economic hardships.
During the 11-hour livestream, KOKO argued that while protests are a crucial tool for holding government accountable and promoting good governance, he cautioned against the current calls for street demonstrations. “Peaceful protests are fundamental rights of every citizen,” he acknowledged, pointing out their historical significance in demanding transparency and accountability.
KOKO highlighted past protests, particularly the 2011 subsidy protests against President Goodluck Jonathan’s fuel subsidy removal, which he claimed were influenced by opposition leaders, including Bola Tinubu. He noted how Tinubu, now President since 2023, has revisited subsidy removal despite previous criticisms, urging a balanced approach to current governance challenges.
“Focusing solely on protests overlooks grassroots governance issues,” KOKO emphasized. He urged organizers to prioritize local concerns like healthcare, education, and infrastructure over national demonstrations. Drawing on UK’s recent electoral shift, he advocated for Nigerians to channel their frustrations into electoral reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Rather than protest on the streets, let’s protest at the ballot boxes,” KOKO concluded, urging patience and strategic action to effect lasting change through democratic processes. As debates on protest intensify, KOKO’s stance underscores a call for Nigerian citizens to engage in constructive dialogue and electoral activism to shape the nation’s future.
