The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has withheld the results of 215,267 candidates from the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) due to allegations of examination malpractice. Dr. Amos Dangut, Head of the National Office (HNO), revealed the news during a press briefing in Lagos on Monday. This figure represents 11.92% of the candidates who took the exam, a decrease from last year’s 16.29%.
Dangut cited several issues contributing to the malpractice, including the use of cell phones in exam halls and organized cheating in some schools. The council is investigating these cases, and decisions will be communicated to the affected candidates through their schools.
Despite these issues, the overall performance was notable. Out of 1,805,216 candidates who sat for the exam, 1,332,089 achieved credits in at least five subjects, while 1,301,941 obtained credits in five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. However, this year saw a slight decrease in performance compared to 2023.
The examination also faced logistical challenges, including security concerns and financial issues exacerbated by inflation. The WAEC continues to address these challenges while striving to maintain the integrity of the examination process.
